Despite the tremendous advances in neuroscience in recent decades, we still have not been able to fully decipher the relationship between the temporal and spatial activity patterns of intertwined neural networks and mental states such as human behavior, cognition, and emotion. Deciphering and promoting the function and health of the human body's most mysterious organ will have major implications for science, medicine, and society.
